In 2016, the BitFinex.com exchange was hacked. The damage was done, but in general, the protection of the exchange coped, and a reward of one million dollars was awarded for information about the hackers.
And now the case is nearing its conclusion. It became known that two people suspected of laundering stolen funds were arrested. In this case, $3.6 billion worth of bitcoins were confiscated.
"Today's arrests and the largest financial seizure of the department in history show that cryptocurrency is not a haven for criminals," said Deputy U.S. Attorney General Lisa O. Monaco.
I will note that the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has formed a new unit focused on the analysis of on-chain activity in decentralized networks.
This proves once again that embezzlement, pyramid schemes, fraud and other similar things using cryptocurrencies leave a digital footprint anywhere in the world. This is a sure way into the hands of the law enforcement system, and the result will be a refund to the victims.
